Giving Guidelines
PURPOSE
These guidelines are designed to help the Giving Committee and the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Amherst to evaluate requests for financial contributions. They are not a substitute for the collective wisdom and judgment of the Board of Directors. The Giving Committee and Directors must be flexible, and should be ready to consider requests in categories listed as “not encouraged” when there are compelling reasons.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
The largest percentage of available revenues should be contributed to organizations and agencies that improve the quality of life in our club area: Amherst, Belchertown, Hadley, Leverett, Pelham and Shutesbury. Examples of community organizations include: Local Human Services, Community Organizations, Education and Youth, and Cultural Institutions. Requests by for-profit entities or individuals are not encouraged.
A fundamental priority of Rotary is international service; a conscious effort should be made to target organizations and activities that promote international understanding and is supportive of the Rotary mission. Requests from overseas organizations, such as libraries and schools, are not encouraged. Requests for donations to be used for salaries or operating expenses are not encouraged.
We estimate that 70-80% of available funding will support local community organizations; while 20-30% may fall into the category of funding international causes.
PROCEDURES
Requests for funding should be in writing, including the special need and what the donation will be used for. Identifying specific needs is encouraged.
RECOGNITION
Whenever possible, the recipient agency should report back to Rotary on the impact of the gift and publicize the Rotary contribution.
